What is a New Jersey motion day?
A motion day is a date designated by the New Jersey Judiciary for a court to consider motions. The assigned judge may decide a motion on the papers, schedule oral argument, or enter a case-specific order.
When are papers for General Motions due?
Rule 1:6-3 generally requires moving papers at least 16 days before the return date, opposition at least 8 days before, and reply papers at least 4 days before. Calendar, holiday, service, and case-specific rules still must be checked.
Are Summary Judgment motion deadlines different?
Yes. Rule 4:46-1 generally requires the Summary Judgment motion at least 28 days before the return date and opposition at least 10 days before. Reply papers are due no later than four days before the return date, with the short-period computation addressed by Rule 1:3-1.
Does this calendar replace a court order or the Rules of Court?
No. It is a planning resource. A scheduling order, judge-specific procedure, filing method, or rule amendment may control a particular matter.
