A vehicle event data recorder, or EDR, is an electronic system that may store a short set of technical information when a crash or near-crash event triggers it. People call it a car’s black box, although it is not a continuous cockpit recorder like the device associated with an airplane. Depending on the vehicle, an EDR may capture speed, accelerator position, braking, engine status, change in velocity, seat-belt use, airbag commands, and timing for a few seconds around the event. It does not automatically identify who was driving, explain why something happened, or record every trip.
The Data Is a Snapshot, Not a Complete Movie
An EDR stores defined parameters supported by the make, model, year, and event. Older vehicles and some systems record less. A minor impact may not meet the trigger needed to create a downloadable event.
Speed may be vehicle-reported rather than independently measured, and a wheel that is sliding or airborne can affect interpretation. The data must be considered with roadway evidence and vehicle condition.
Preserve the Vehicle Before Repair or Destruction
A total-loss vehicle can be moved to salvage and sold quickly. Battery loss, module replacement, further impacts, or dismantling can complicate retrieval. Written preservation notice should identify the vehicle and electronic modules before destructive work occurs.
Preservation does not give either side unlimited access. Ownership, consent, privacy law, insurer rights, discovery rules, and a court order may determine when and how an inspection happens.
Qualified Download and Interpretation Matter
A trained technician or reconstruction professional uses compatible hardware and software to image supported data. The process should be documented, with the original report, tool version, vehicle identification, module status, and any errors retained.
An expert may then interpret delta-v, timing, braking, and other parameters. Delta-v means change in velocity during the impact. It is useful in reconstruction, but it is not the same as preimpact travel speed or a medical opinion about injury.
EDR Evidence Can Test Competing Stories
Data may support or contradict testimony about braking, acceleration, seat belts, or speed. It can also be inconclusive. A missing parameter should not be presented as proof that an action did not occur if the vehicle never recorded that parameter.

Can an insurer download my vehicle without permission?
